Superman, Black Panther, Green Lantern, Iron Man, Captain America, Thor, The Flash, Scarlet Witch, Black Widow, Wonder Woman. All of these characters are examples for children, or even adults, all around the world, and are considered perfect examples for the term “Hero”. In the odyssey we see the journey of Odysseus, and his perils, and his victories and losses. Odysseus fits the archetype of a hero, in many ways, so he will be compared to a stereotypical hero, Batman. Batman and Odysseus are both fit to be called a “hero” for many reasons, for example, they show strength, bravery, and confidence many times throughout their journeys, they both come up against supernatural foes, and they are both of Noble birth.

In the story of the Cyclops in “The Odyssey”, lines 374-378, Odysseus and his men do this “I drew it from the coals and my four fellows gave me a hand, lugging it neat the Cyclops as more than natural force served them; straight forward they lifted it, and rammed it deep in his crater eye…” This shows how Odysseus has to fight off supernatural foes, and defeats them, along with his crew. This aspect is important because it is almost a necessity with heroes so there can be some sort of conflict throughout their quest. Which is also important so the story does not get dull and boring, and so the hero can show their feats of strength in battle with a formidable opponent. Fighting these supernatural foes can also make heroes improve upon their abilities and cause more character development throughout their story. Batman has to fight many supernatural foes throughout his quest, including Bane, Killer Croc, a mutated, stronger version of the Joker and Poison Ivy. In the bottom part of page 16 in “The Odyssey” on lines 144-146, Odysseus says this “Where shall a man find sweetness to surpass his home and his parents? In far lands he shall not, though he find a house of gold.” This means that Odysseus has a difficult time living up to his parents’ legacy and outgrowing just being known as “Laertes’ Son.” I think this matters because it implies that his father, Laertes, had a heft legacy to live up to, which means he is of Noble Birth. I think this is a good quality for heroes to have because it makes them more special, and even better, it makes them special from the moment they were born. Batman was born from wealthy philanthropist parents who were very famous in his home city (Gotham) for hosting fundraisers for the betterment of the city, donating to hundreds of charities, and just being good people. This means that Batman has a large legacy to live up to when it comes to his parents. This is important because Batman trying to live up to their legacy adds more conflict to his story, which is more mental conflict, which can be considered another popular factor in a hero’s story. He attempts to live up to their legacy either by fighting crime as Batman or trying to help the city using the money that his alter ego, Bruce Wayne has. All these factors prove my point that Odysseus and Batman both are of Divine or Noble
