Did you know that over 5,399 people died in two tragic attacks occurring almost 60 years apart and only lasting one day each? Pearl Harbor and 9/11 were both attacks against the United States occurring on United States soil and the attackers shared a common goal, which was to destroy our sense of security. The way they destroyed our sense of security during the Japanese attack back in 1941 was to surprise bomb the US Naval ships on the Islands of Hawaii causing disbelief and chaos. In similarity, the attacks of 9/11 were carried out by terrorists using our commercial planes to fly into the World Trade Center while people were going about their daily routines. Both attacks caused fear, loss of security, and brought us into wars.

The attack lasted 110 minutes, from 7:45 a.m to 9:45 a.m. Chaos was everywhere, loud guns shooting bullets whizzed by, gasoline explosions were heard, and the smell of burning fuel was everywhere. A total of 2,335 U.S. servicemen were killed, 1143 were wounded, 68 civilians were also killed and 35 were wounded. The 9/11 attacks forced Mayor Giuliani to call for the evacuation of Lower Manhattan south of Canal Street to include more than 1 million residents, workers, and tourists as efforts continued throughout the day to search for survivors. Meanwhile the American Flight 77 that hit the Pentagon killed all 58 passengers, four flight attendants, and both pilots on board the American Flight 77, as well as 125 occupants of the Pentagon. There were a total of 2,996 people who were killed on 9/11. Although 5,400 people were diagnosed with cancer from the smoke and jet fuel and numerous other responders, firefighters, and personnel still reeling from the aftermath, it took two months for the 9/11 clean
