Conformity is gradually oppressing the world in which we live in. This ideal is prominently illustrated in the film Pleasantville which is directed, and produced by Gary Ross. Pleasantville is a great demonstration of the dangers of abiding by society’s expectations, and the freedoms that come with rebelling to these expectations and embracing change. Gary Ross uses several literary techniques such as; colour (symbolism), and character development to indicate the lack of creativity, and originality in society. Throughout the film, Ross illustrates how obstructive conformity can be to society, and how rewarding rebelling to societal norms can be for not only self growth, but societal advancement as well.

Dilworth discusses the unhealthy relationship the narrator, Faulkner, has with Emily it’s imaginary state, and how the relationship is required for both to exist, in “A Romance to Kill for: Homicidal Complicity in Faulkner’s ‘A Rose for Emily’.” Dilworth explains how the narrator and the townspeople value their southern heritage and beliefs by pressuring Emily to follow their ideas. These values and beliefs control much of the story and explain why Emily commits murder. Emily fell in love with a northerner, against the townspeople’s liking, they pretend to think she ends the relationship, therefore obeying their values. Dilworth mentions that he townspeople wanted to, “preserve the values of the old South embodied in Emily as a representative of idealized southern womanhood” (252).

Instead, there are sections, which are not in chronological order, that describe a particular conflict or event, which in turn creates suspense, as each conflict builds upon each other to make the reader question the overall context and organization of the story.
Over the course of the novel, Faulkner explores existential behaviors and questions about the meaning of life and death, as well as trying to understand the purpose an individual has in an irrational world. Characters such as Darl, Addie, and Vardaman all convey existentialistic behavior leaving them to view the world from a different perspective than other characters such as Jewel. Most high school students are subject to an everyday routine consisting of having classes all day, having to talk to teachers and go to extracurricular activities just to go home to study and sleep. If you have ever watched high school musical growing up you may have thought about what high school was really going to be like when you get there. Kids wonder if it will be similar to the movie or if it will be completely different than they thought. High school and high school musical have their similarities originating from everyday life when in reality they differ in the reality of students, teachers, classes, sports and musicals. High school students are everyday typical teenagers, their attention is stuck on their phone, and friends for the most part.
What I mean by that is that eventually the happiness with each other would end. Mrs. Hutchinson, the unfortunate woman who was chosen to murder with stones and pebbles was good friends with Mr. Summer, had a good relationship to the village, and was close to her family, yet still was punished by everyone she thought she knew. On line 320, it mentions how Mrs. Hutchinson’s own son follows the rest of the people do towards her mother. “The children had stones already, and gave little Davy a few pebbles.” This could be easily related with a person who I believed was along the rest of the people and left my side.
In fiction, the narrator controls how the audience connects to and perceives the various characters in a story. A good author can manipulate the narration to connect the audience to certain characters and deepen the reader’s understanding of their conflicts. In “Previous Condition” and “Sonny’s Blues,” James Baldwin illustrates themes of loneliness and isolation in the pursuit of finding a space that feels like home. Although this theme is clear in both stories, Baldwin is able to portray it very differently in each story through the relationship he allows the reader to the characters struggling with these feelings. While “Previous Condition” provides a more intimate relationship to the narrator, “Sonny’s Blues” is able to deliver an additional level of understanding by telling the story through Sonny’s brother, therefore disconnecting the reader in a way that forces him or her to share the characters’ feelings of isolation and confusion.

An analysis of William Faulkner’s “A Rose for Emily” will explain how Faulkner portrays the change in the social structure of the American South in the early twentieth century as a change from Old South to New South by showing the Griersons no longer hold power, the changes in the town, and Emily’s denial to change. In the New South the Griersons no longer hold power. Emily believes that her family still holds the power that they had in the Old South, so she never payed her taxes.
