Over the years since the United States was founded there have been many different police departments and different styles of policing. Different styles for diverse cities in the United States. Two of these styles were community policing and team policing. Team policing was practiced in the 1970s and eventually was replaced with community policing which is what we see today used by police departments. Both styles were very different, but community policing was more effective and what the general public favored. Team policing was designed to improve police crime control effectiveness by assigning a group of officers to a specific area that had a specific demographic of people who lived in that area. Community policing also increased more foot patrols and bike patrols which affectively let residents communicate with officers casually and playfully either with words or with a smile. Compared to team policing where instead of seeing a cop on his bicycle smiling and nodding at you in uniform, you as a resident just saw multiple cars going up and down your lane. Team policing was not social at all, officers did not talk to people outside of the business of the incident and that was it. Team policing was overall not effective, it made people not trust the police and did not help build a relationship between police officers and residents. Community policing instead lets officers solve crimes faster and more efficiently because now they have the help of the public. residents knew that the officers were here to protect us and work for us, so they communicated. residents were able to comfortably come forward and share any details or anything suspicious they saw that might be related to an investigation; they were also more open to questioning by
