Raiders of the Lost Ark vs. The Grand Budapest Hotel The visual aspects of The Grand Budapest Hotel and Raiders of the Lost Ark portray two different ideas and viewpoints of the world at that time. In both movies, the main stories take place during the 30s, before and during early WWII, so naturally, the films each have a political aspect to them. In The Grand Budapest Hotel, the setup of the whole movie, or the mise-en-sc?ne, is colorful and symmetrical. Whereas in Raiders of the Lost Ark, the setup is darker and shadowy. Like when the lawyer is being chased by the bad guy, the shadows and swift movements are used to portray the fear of the scene. However, in Raiders of the Lost Ark, the setting and lighting are used to foreshadow and to give an ominous feeling. The ambiance of The Grand Budapest Hotel gives off a childlike feeling where they dial down the seriousness of the movie, which is to be expected in comedy movies. However, when compared to the jokes that are made in Raiders of the Lost Ark, which are subtle and sometimes hard to catch on to given the seriousness of the moment, it really shows the artistic choices chosen by the directors of each film. The artistic choices made by the directors in each of the films are both very complex but different in many ways. For example, in Raiders of the Lost Ark, the decision to show the swastika in very menacing lighting and scenes, was most likely a personal choice by the director, Steven Spielberg, who is Jewish and whose family was actually targeted during the Holocaust.
