Rome's military force mainly depended on its better technology and engineering, but Sparta's focused upon their greater military tactics and methods. Although Rome sought to enlarge its realm and establish an empire, Sparta sought to maintain its position as the dominating force in the area. While Rome had far loftier aspirations to establish an empire, the War between Athens and Sparta War was primarily centered on Sparta's intention of preserving its position as the dominating force in the area. Rome attempted to extend its influence and strength further than the Italian peninsula by conquest and expansion, whereas Sparta aimed to keep both in the region. Although Rome aimed to subjugate either Italian peninsula and hence the city of Carthage, Sparta attempted to gain supremacy over the Greek city-states. Sparta's goal to assert its supremacy over the remaining Greek city-states dominated the Peloponnesian War. Romans, on the other hand, had considerably loftier goals, including conquests of Carthage and the entire Italian peninsula.
