“A reader lives a thousand lives before he dies. The man who never reads lives only one.” (George R.R. Martin). A reader can experience many new and different cultures by reading a variety of different books. The reader is also able to experience the lives of the all the contrasting characters and thus live a thousand lives unlike someone who never reads. In the selection, Superman and Me by Sherman Alexie, Alexie emphasizes that reading and writing can save people’s lives. Reading and writing can save lives in many ways, such as helping someone discover themselves, making someone smarter, and relieving stress. While someone writes they are able to get things off their chest. Just simple things such as how their day went to what they did over the weekend and even deeper feelings or thoughts that they feel that they can not tell anyone or that no one would understand. Once they start writing sometimes thoughts just keep popping in their head and they just keep writing what is on their mind. It also helps them write down what they are feeling inside such as happiness, hurt or anger. It is much easier to for them to write down what they are feeling than actually tell someone or say it out loud. Even if no one reads what they wrote at least they are able to write their feelings down and hopefully accept them. Writing also helps people discover the truth about themselves. Truth is something that is true or real and can be something that one does not want to discover or be true about themselves or others, such as events or feelings. Sometimes things just keep coming to the writer’s mind and they realize something that they have been trying to hide from others or even themselves. Reading is another way to relieve stress just by being able to relax and forget whatever is on their mind. While reading a book or article, I have experience that I forget everything else that is happening to me and around me and all I can think about is what is happening in what I am
