The Age of Exploration spurred European powers to spread their influence across many different continents. Among the most significantly impacted were the Americas and Australia. The Europeans wreaked havoc on indigenous religion, culture and population. The Conquest of the Americas began in the 15th century after Christopher Columbus discovered the Bahamas. This would mark the beginning of European oppression towards the Indigenous tribes of the Americas. The lust for wealth and power drove the Spanish to exploit Indigenous people for resources and land. However, the Colonization of Australia started much later in the early 16th century when Dutch explorer Willem Janszoon landed in Queensland, but unlike the Conquest of the Americas, the Europeans had many different reasons. The Dutch East India Company wanted to search for economic opportunities across Australia. The British used Australia as a way to create new settlements for criminals, but all these European countries wanted one thing in general. Trade routes. European conquests usually involved large-scale military campaigns. The war between the Aztecs and Incas is a good example of this, as millions of native peoples died through the intentional spread of disease, forced labour and warfare. In Australia, conflict between the settlers and indigenous tribes did happen. The British soldiers used other stratagems such as taking children from their parents (Stolen Generation) and the overall control over their population. While the British soldiers rarely fought with Indigenous Australians, British settlers did. A warrior named Pemulway waged a 10-year rebellion against British settlers in Sydney.
