A dream was spoken by a man. A leader who hoped his dream would come true. In 1954 a race banded together to start a movement. A movement which sent a message to others saying we want our rights and we want our equality. A civil movement that made history with leaders who stood out like Martin Luther King jr, Rosa Parks , Malcolm X. Today we have a movement that has started. Police brutality was always big in the U.S. We now have technology that capture these incidents on footage. We now have many other races uniting together to help draw attention to and hopefully stop the brutality on blacks. If we compare the two movements they are very similar. But is this “Black Lives Matter Movement” a second civil rights movement? The black lives matter movement is not a second civil rights movement because the civil rights movement and the black lives matter movement address two different messages and the leaders of today are distinctively different.
One reason why the black lives matter movement is not a second civil rights movement because it addresses a different message than its predecessor. The definition of civil rights is the rights of citizens to political and social freedom and equality. As Martin Luther King gave speeches, today we are using megaphones and shouting throughout neighborhoods. Today we can catch these events on our phones, while back then we went of pictures and video that came the press. This is why the black lives matter movement is not a second civil rights movement because the civil rights movement and the black lives matter movement address two different messages and the leaders of today are highly different.
