Each state has their own branches of government and the federal government as well. Each branch has a different job and with checks and balances they can all monitor their power so no branch has more power. Checks and balances are limits of power to the three branches of government which are the Legislative, Executive, and Judicial branch. The Legislative branch in Texas for example is represented by Texas legislature which has a bicameral congress with 150 members of the House of Representatives and 31 state senate members. The governor is elected by this branch as well as the President is with the Electoral College. The main job they have is to write laws that will benefit the state and they meet for that every odd year. Also they work on issues like education, public safety, public health, and power to tax. The state Legislative branch has to follow the Texas Constitution. The federal government has to follow the U.S. Constitution. The Legislative branch in the federal system has the power to override a presidential veto, impeach the president, oversee foreign policy and national defense, impose tariffs, declare war, enter into treaties, and interpret the Constitution.
