Carl Vinson and Richard Russell, both Georgians, have contributed very much to America’s military around War World II. They were big influences although they started as politicians. These two men made large impacts to 2 of the 3 branches of the military in very diverse ways. In those times, they impacted US history very much. Carl Vinson, “the father of the two ocean navy”, was a man that previously held the record for most years served in U.S Congress. Vinson concentrated on military and especially navy affairs over his extensive record breaking career. He served twenty-five consecutive terms in the US House of Representatives. He became the most influential and powerful voice in Congress when it came to shaping defense policies. He even earned the nickname “The Admiral” for his strong support of the navy. Throughout the 1920s and 1930, he consistently stressed for strengthening the nation’s defenses and preparedness. Russell practiced law, after a year he was elected to the House Of Representatives. He was elected Speaker pro tempore by the state house in 1923 and 1925. Russell was elected Speaker of the House in 1927 and stayed in that position until 1931. He was the youngest Georgia Governor in the 20th century. After he became a senator and led five senators around the world to visit the war theaters and to report on the status of American troops.
