The Great Gatsby is a classic novel revealing the time period of the 1920’s. The novel exhibits countless examples of imagery and the reoccurring theme of the “American dream”. Throughout my junior year of high school, The Great Gatsby was shoved down everybody’s throat in some way, shape, or form. By the time we were all finished with the book, the majority of reader’s became excited that the book concluded; but the minority, such as myself, decided to proceed on. I became infatuated with The Great Gatsby; re watching the 2013 movie over and over countless times. I could not get over the love Jay Gatsby had for Daisy Buchanan, the way the film was made, and the size of Daisy Buchanan’s ring from Tom Buchanan, her husband. The beginnings of the two movies are very different. In the opening of the 1974 film, the narrator introduces the story concentrating on the visual effect of it. The movie shows Gatsby’s mansion, a scrapbook of Daisy, a monogrammed hairbrush, and a photograph of Daisy on Gatsby’s vanity. Whereas in the 2013 film, Nick is in a sanitarium where he's checked himself in, and has been diagnosed as a morbid alcoholic, “writing” the book that you are about to watch a movie on. Another difference that these two films have is the acting. Robert Redford, who plays Gatsby in the 1974 film, does not show too much emotion. Even though Redford does look more like the image of Gatsby that I created in my mind, he does not portray Gatsby’s personality at all like the 2013 film does. In the 2013 film, Elizabeth Debicki plays the golf star Jordan Baker. Debicki does a splendid job of portraying Jordan’s action, looks, and way of life. However in the 1974 film, the actor playing the role of Jordan Baker did not make as much of an impact on the film. Last but not least, Daisy Buchanan. In the most recent film, Daisy is played by Carey Mulligan and perfectly portrays Daisy as a “beautiful little fool”, which Daisy strives to be like in the actual novel. In the 1974 film however, the actor, Mia Farrow, is much older than I imagined and created an awkward gap between Daisy and Gatsby. The effects were also a big difference in both
