Since the beginning of time, people have gone to war. Whether it was over land, reasoning, religion, and a multitude of various topics, someone somewhere has gone to war over it. In an ideal world, there would be no war. However, we do not live in an ideal world. We live in a place where countries are divided over their beliefs, where families cannot sit down to dinner for half an hour because they can’t agree on anything. War, no matter how hard we try, is always going to be an inevitable element of human existence, it doesn’t matter how hard anyone tries to eliminate it. We wanted to believe ourselves neutral and leave the rest of the world to fight out their issues. In both the Great War and World War Two, America began with a neutral stance. However, as presidents Woodrow Wilson and Franklin Delano Roosevelt would eventually find out, it is essentially impossible to stay out of a war when your country relies on those at war. During the Great War, the Zimmerman Note struck fear in the hearts of many Americans, but it also struck desperation. They became desperate for their country’s young men to suit up and protect the land that is rightfully theirs. It is also unforgettable that the president was telling his people that this would be the war to end all wars. America joined the Great War late, but they still joined the Allied powers. Then again in World War Two, the war America spurred on because of its isolationist moves. When Hitler, Mussolini, and Stalin came to power, the world again went to arms. Extreme dictatorship led to oppression and those against their beliefs with power fought back. America tried desperately again to remain neutral, even passing Neutrality Acts and passing the Cash and Carry Act. First economically and then physically, America joined the fight, however, this time a lot quicker than the previous world
