Creation Stories
Many years ago Native American tribes told origin myth stories, a mixture of science and religion that explains how the world and everything in it came to be. Native American creation stories and Biblical creation stories have a lot of similarities, but they also have many differences.
The Native American and the Biblical creation stories are similar in many ways. The Iroquois creation story tells about the lower world and the upper world. The lower world was dark and inhabited by monsters. The upper world was inhabited by mankind. The Biblical creation story tells about Heaven and Hell. Heaven is filled with angels and goodness and would be a comparison to the upper world. Hell would be a comparison to the lower world with its darkness and evilness. In the Iroquois story the creator is described as a woman, and in Genesis the creator is described as a man. In the Iroquois story a woman is pregnant with two twin boys. One has a good mind, and the other one has a evil mind. The two twins have a fight in the woman's stomach which cause the woman’s stomach to explode. This events causes the women to die during birth. After the fight is over, the good mind boy creates the sun with an orb from the deceased woman’s head. He also takes other body parts to help make his creation of earth. In Genesis the creator is God, a man not a woman. In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth.The earth was without form and void, and darkness was over the face of the earth.
