Diving into two of Shirley Jackson's popular stories. I’ll be comparing and contrasting The Lottery and The Haunting of Hill House, both being horror stories. I’ll be going over the stories of both texts and pinpointing onto certain characters of how the setting of the scene impacted some of their behaviors. Looking into Shirley Jackson’s stories, The Lottery and The Haunting of Hill House, there’s a difference and similarity in how the characters act within the setting of the scene because it brings out what’s really within a character’s heart. She even managed to be appointed an editor of a magazine club, met her future husband, who’s a literary critic, after winning a poetry contest at her school, and graduated in 1940. Jackson regularly published her stories to The New Republic and The New Yorker, and was reached out by Bennington College in 1945, to become a teacher. After publishing The Lottery, the story became well known, and she wrote a bunch of short stories for popular magazines. Some of her stories even had the chance to be adapted into film versions. She sadly passed away in 1965, North Bennington, VT, from a heart attack. The Lottery was one of Jackson’s first short stories, first published in The New Yorker in 1948. Without any context at first you may think the story is an enjoyable town since it starts off with the classic, “The morning of June 27th was clear and sunny, with the fresh warmth of a full-summer day; the flowers were blossoming profusely and the grass was richly green.” (Jackson, The Lottery 1). Usually stories that start off with it being a joyous day, you’ll think it would be a heartwarming
