The Maccabean god was built upon many of the strict rules declaring that there was to be no other gods except God himself. This situation is only exacerbated when the Seleucid king, Antiochus IV, attempted to Hellenize Judea by placing the Greek god, Zeus, into the temple. This act outraged many Jews, particularly, Mattathias who led a revolt against the king, believing it was the Jewish responsibility to resist God’s replacement (Kingdom of David: Book and the Sword 41:00-45:00). Much like Job’s god, who was unhappy with Job for questioning his authority, the Maccabees believed that the Maccabean god was unhappy with any Jews who welcomed the Greek culture, which broke many Jewish laws and traditions.
