The Mendez et al V. Westminster Board of Education came into effect when Gonzalo Mendez’s children were denied the acceptance of registering at Westminster Main School in Westminster, California; the school district where his children belonged. His sister Soledad Vidaurri went to register her children and Mendez’s 3 children at Westminster Main School. Mendez’s children were denied the right to attend an “all white” school because of their race and dark colored skin. They were told to attend Hoover school where only Mexicans attended. Soledad’s children were accepted into the school because their skin color was light and their last name came from French descendents. As a teacher, I am committed to give each of my students the right to receive help. Just because a student is having trouble pronouncing the English language I know that I shouldn’t talk down on them or ignore them because they are not grasping the language better than others. I am entitled to equally teach my students and find ways to help them better their learning. As a bilingual teacher, I will find programs or other activities that I know can help them, so that they can be successful. The Bilingual Education Act of 1968 has been said to be the first official federal recognition of the needs of students with limited English speaking ability (LESA). It addressed students of low income who were non- speaking and limited English speaking students. This act was signed by the President Obama on December 10,2015. In 2002, the No Child Left Behind Act was enacted. Overtime the NCLB act was not working for schools and educators. According to Obama ESSA includes provisions that will ensure success for students and schools. For example, provide more kids access to high-quality preschool, prepares all students for success in college and career, holds all students to high academic standards and a few others. I think that this is an act that should be put into law. It not only benefits our bilingual students, but the rest of the students as well.
