The ascension of Theodore Roosevelt to the presidency marked a dramatic turning point in bringing meaningful reform in America because he was the first ever president to lead hands on and believed that the government should serve as an agent of reform for the people. Roosevelt abandoned his Republican counterparts’ ideals of a ‘laissez-faire’ economy and turned to helping the American people through welfare programs and minimum wage laws. Above all, Theodore Roosevelt served as a voice for the masses and implemented what they had long desired. American voters became more influential in presidential elections because of the events that took place during the Jacksonian and Progressive Eras. In the Jacksonian Era, some voting restrictions were removed, voting became more private, the public was more informed about politics, and voters were taken into greater consideration by presidential candidates. In the Progressive Era, better living conditions, the fight against corruption, and other political reforms made it easier for the working class to vote for candidates that they favored. During the years of the Progressive era and the New Deal period, the United States saw a lot of intervention by the government, specifically focused on the working and living conditions of those in poverty. Both periods were focused in helping the everyday man get what he needs and had primarily no focus on the social, economic, and political rights for African-Americans. Differences include the fact that Progressive focus concerning the work field was more about fixing the conditions for everyone; men, women, and children alike, but the New Deal’s focus was more on getting men back in work. The success of the programs and policies seemed to coincide with the feeling of the period. The Progressive era had successful outcomes with ideas and reforms, matching the upbeat, fast-moving feeling of the time.
Progressive Era Reforms During the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, the United States was experiencing a time of widespread reform. This movement brought great changes to multiple fields and areas in the United States. These reforms were ideas that improved the quality of life for working and normal citizens in the United States. Two such examples of these movements are found in reforms made within the working and living conditions across America.
The Progressive Era was a period of great progress between the 1890s to the 1920s. An ultimate factor that contributed to progressivism was the force of industrialism. At the time, America was experiencing technological innovation which in turn affected society socially and politically. “Progressive reformers brought into public debate issues such as the role of women in society and the rights of labor” (Brinkley, 476). Essentially, reformers were raising awareness for women involvement in society.
How the Progressive Era shaped the U.S. The Progressive Era was “a time period ranging from the 1890s to the 1920s that included purification of the government, modernization, a focus on improvement on working conditions, and women’s suffrage” (Lumenlearning). Most of America’s flaws, which ranged from economic issues to political representation, were mended during the Progressive Era. The Progressive Era has had the most significant impact on the development of America because of the laws and acts passed during the Progressive Era. To begin,The Progressive Era is the most impactful time period for America because many meaningful laws and reforms were passed.
The Progressive Era, from 1900-1917, was a time when problems were solved, tactics were used to solve them, and foundations were laid for future reforms. During this time, steps and precautions were laid that regulated business, rights, government, and life as we know it. A major goal of this time was the exploitation of the corrupt aspects of the government. After the goals and reforms were met during this time, America became better and better in the eyes of reform groups and activists.
During the progressive era, progressive reforms were mixes of successes in the area of urban life. Reformers believed that urbanization was the root to many social problems, so they worked to fix them. Some of their reforms worked well, whereas others did not. They worked hard to improve conditions in the cities after seeing the poverty, filth, and crime that occurred mostly between 1890 to 1920. Progressives were mostly successful in reforming urban living conditions.
The Progressive Era lasted from the 1890’s to the early 1920’s. It was centralized around socialism and political reform. One of the major changes that took place during this era, was the labor legislation. Many workers were working long shifts, for several days straight, making their work life just about unbearable, and unworkable conditions. The job environment had become to where it was unsafe, unsanitary, and unregulated conditions for very low wages.
Political Changes of the Progressive Era Prior to the Progressive Era, politics was influenced by Laissez-Faire economics. This meant the government let supply and demand dictate the economy. This would lead to unregulated industry with generally poor conditions. Politics also turned a blind eye to social issues of the industrial era. This would change with the emergence of the progressive era.
The Progressive Era’s agenda came from a mixture of the Populists, Urbanization and the upper/middle class families. (Shultz, 2014). The group evolved from cleaning up the deteriorated inner cities, to better industrial work environments, as a result the employees being more efficient. Their focus shifted to more government regulation over the labor industry. Furthermore, it was their efforts that led to creating national parks across America, which was the conservation movement.
The Gilded age was a period in the late 1800s (1865-1900) that showed tremendous increase of wealth caused by the industrial age. The lifestyle of the rich during this period hid the many problems of the time that eventually brought about the progressive era movement. This was a movement for reform between 1900-1920s. Progressives typically held that the irresponsible actions of the rich were corrupting both public and private life. Forces such as immigration, the Populist Party and industrialization that led to the progressive era also impacted the American government both in its activeness and its democracy.
A lot of things have happened over time, but from 1890-1920, incredible things occurred, leading the world how it is today. This time period, known as the Progressive Era, has brought changes, for the better, in the categories of: politics, working conditions, and urban life. From events like corruption in the ballot-box, to the poor and very unsanitary working conditions in the Meat Packaging Industry, laws and official documents were put in place, when reforms were desperately needed. So, overall these reforms were very effective, changing the working industries, “all-things political”, and urban life.
