Kaitlin Lovin History 311 Dominic Cerri April 9, 2017 The Spanish, French, and English Exploration of America Many countries from Europe decided to explore America, and ultimately colonize. There was excitement for new beginnings and profit. The Spanish, French, and English all wanted to escape their past and find wealth and opportunity in the “New World”. The three countries listed above all shared similar desires in coming to America but had a different view on how they would achieve them. although the countries differed in how each colony was defined. The first to discover America were the Spanish. In seeking out the “New World”, the Spanish chose discovery by sea, as they had better ships and navigation than the other countries. When the Spanish found America, the found the riches. They were seen as “Gods” to the native American Indians. The Spanish were Catholics. There was great profit to be made in this market. The fur was said to be so precious that they were not allowed, by governing law of France, to trade the furs with the Indians. Just like the Spanish laws that were made, the French laws could not be properly enforced. This led to the King granting permission to the French to trade furs with the Natives. The King of France granting the permission to trade with the natives was only so he could monopolize on the benefits of the land. The French were ultimately attracted to the fertile land, unlike the Spanish who wanted the “conquest of the native people and their exploitation as a labor force in mining, farming, or livestock raising”.
