We have two primary data systems for the fire service in the United States, and they are both voluntary for fire departments. Data systems can be a big advantage for firefighter’s safety, which can help us to identify causes, and help us with long term solutions in the fire service. Our first data system is the National Fire Incident Reporting Systems (NFIRS). This systems is primarily a source for information of line-of-duty deaths and injuries. Participating fire departments report about 22,000,000 incidents and 1,000,000 fires each year, and this is largely through volunteer efforts of participating departments.
