Hill Company in Chicago on May 17, 1900. The Wizard of Oz is one of the most widely read books by children. There are also plays and a movie produced based on this book. The difference between the movie and the book is subtle. The movie leaves out some of the important historical events from the book, for instance Dorothy’s silver shoes are represented as ruby in the movie, Dorothy goes to the Wonderland in dream in the movie; whereas, in the book it’s a reality. Money problems, specially for farmers, emerged because of the gold standards that could be solved by the silver standards. Dorothy wearing silver shoes and trying to solve her as well as her friends problems is indicative of the situation in 19th century America, in the book. This indicator is missing in the movie. Another logistical difference is that Dorothy being in the wonderland is just a dream in the movie, whereas in the book she faces all of these situations in real life. There is no mention of the winged Monkeys. The Winged Monkeys are west Americans which is of great importance to the story if one is to read the book or watch the movie as a parable of 19th century America. The movie differs from the book in its tone. The book has a lot of violence in it and is darker, whereas the movie waters down the violence. First of all, Dorothy faces the wicked witch when she gets to the wonderland, but the movie shows us that she meets Glinda, the Good Witch.
