In writing A Voyage Long and Strange, Tony Horwitz’s goal is clear, to educate others on early America and debunk ignorant myths. Horwitz’s reason for wanting to achieve this goal is because of his own ignorance that he sees while at Plymouth Rock. “Expensively educated at a private school and university- a history major, no less!-I’d matriculated to middle age with a third grader’s grasp of early America.” Horwitz is disappointed in his own lack of knowledge of his home country, especially with his background history and decides not only to research America’s true beginnings, but to also follow the path of those who originally yearned to discover America.
In her book, American Jezebel: The Uncommon Life of Anne Hutchinson, the Woman Who Defied the Puritans, Eve LaPlante explores parts of the life of Anne Hutchinson. Her intent is to tell the story of Anne Hutchinson’s life and clear her name as a woman who was accused of being a heretic in colonial America. LaPlante walks the reader through the trial Anne Hutchinson had with the leaders of her colony and gives background information throughout the book to share the story of Hutchinson’s life. LaPlante starts the story of Anne Hutchinson’s life at the beginning of her well-known trial. She tells of the occurrences in the room and compares Hutchinson’s trial to her father’s trial, which was similar in their accusation and punishment.
Their role in this culture was like a dictatorship , they wanted things to go their way, which caused many humans to suffer from. William Bradford was the first person to write about thanksgiving with the Indians in the new world. He was one of the only one’s to write about this event which made a great impact to us knowing the knowledge of this favorite holiday: Thanksgiving. The puritans represented the poor society and how they rose up to fame, not in their time but a few hundred years later their work showed positivity in the light of negativity. In both Edward’s and Ann’s poems they show a great respect for God and in the belief of heaven.
The motley crew, made up of sailors and slaves led fights, revolts, and rebellions that stirred a change in America and led to the American Revolution. The sailors and slaves repeatedly received the short end of the stick in the British Colonial Empire. In response, they were unafraid to start conflicts and instigate hostilities between themselves and the upper class of merchants and plantation owners. They led rebellions against the injustices they saw, from press-gangs to worker’s wage riots and the re-enslavement of free-men. The motley crew led to politicians believing that all men are equal with unalienable rights, not just British land-owning men.

Gilje’s book, To Swear Like a Sailor, Gilje explains how maritime culture shaped our country, but more importantly how life at sea was just as much affected by life on dry land as life and literature on land affected sailors. Their success derived from cooperation with the natives, providing a basis for the Thanksgiving story. The Puritans of Massachusetts Bay held pride in their Christianity. A woman’s place in Puritan society was very limited during these times. A preface was added to her narrative by a puritan pastor as approval for her to publish her prose. Before her captivity Rowlandson didn’t know what a struggle consisted of. She was the typical housewife in a Puritan society. She never went without food, shelter, or clothing before her captivity.
During the colonial period many settlers came to the New World to escape persecution for their Puritan beliefs. Writers such as William Bradford, John Winthrop, Anne Bradstreet, and Mary Rowlandson all shared their experiences and religious devotion throughout their literature that ultimately inspired and influenced settlers to follow. This essay will discuss the similarities in Anne Bradstreet and Mary Rowlandson’s work as they both describe their experiences as signs from God. Anne Bradstreet came to the New World as a devoted Puritan as she repeatedly talked about it in her poetry. In her poems she discusses many tragedies that happened in her life such as; the burning of her house and the death of her two grandchildren all of which she thinks were signs from God.
The arrival of the first Europeans in the Americas is dramatically captured through the many writers who attempted to communicate what they saw, experienced and felt. What is more, the very purposes of their treacherous travel and colonization are clearly seen in their writings; whether it is poetry, history or sermons. Of the many literary pieces available today, William Bradford and John Winthrop’s writings, even though vary because the first is a historical account and the second is a sermon, stand out as presenting a clear trust in God, the rules that would govern them and the reason they have arrived in the Americas. First of all, William Bradford provides an in-depth look into the first moment when the Puritans arrived in the Americas. In fact, he chronicles the hardships they face on their way to Plymouth, yet he includes God’s provision every step of the way.
Puritans are a people with a very strong belief in both God and the power of God. When people see power, they interpret it in different ways. Some know of power through anger and impulse, while others see power through the goodness the powerful one shows. Although Anne Bradstreet and Jonathan Edwards are both puritan poets, their writings convey mainly different, though sometimes similar, views on God because they have different perceptions of His will and the use of His power. Anne Bradstreet listens to and accepts anything that God wishes, and that is shown through her poem Upon the Burning of my House.
One topic brought up in the discussion was how perception changes over time. With the example of fire, fire used to be essential to survival back during the time of cavemen. In modern times, we have electricity and heaters so we take fire for granted. This idea can be connected to witchcraft because the way we view something changes based on our moral values and how we live. After doing background research about puritans the first time I read the book, I understood that Puritans placed a high value upon hard work, their religion, and living a honest and pure life so that they will be saved; however I never really connected their lifestyle to their belief in witchcraft.
Anne Bradstreet (1612 – 1672) has been a long-lasting leading figure in the American literature who embodied a myriad of identities; she was a Puritan, poet, feminist, woman, wife, and mother. Bradstreet’s poetry was a presence of an erudite voice that animadverted the patriarchal constraints on women in the seventeenth century. In a society where women were deprived of their voices, Bradstreet tried to search for their identities. When the new settlers came to America, they struggled considerably in defining their identities. However, the women’s struggles were twice than of these new settlers; because they wanted to ascertain their identities in a new environment, and in a masculine society.
