The Story of an Hour and the Yellow Wallpaper both use specific details to demonstrate the relationship between men and women.Both the Story of an Hour and the Yellow Wallpaper take place in a time where women and women’s rights are not respected in the eyes of men. They are seen as second class people to their husbands or any of the other men in their lives. In the Story of an Hour, the protagonist is a woman named Louise. She has a heart condition and the story goes through her emotions after finding out her husband died. In the Yellow Wallpaper, the narrator is forced into bed rest to treat her mental condition. The sky poking through represents the freedom that Louise is experiencing without her husband, which is represented by the clouds. The relationship between her and her husband is clear in the sense that she felt trapped, and with the passing of her husband, she finally felt free.In the Yellow Wallpaper, the narrator’s mental condition slowly worsens as her concerns are simply tossed to the side by her husband. One way the Yellow Wallpaper uses specific details to demonstrate the relationship between men and women is how the narrator’s husband responds to the narrator’s repeated calls of distress.
