The most important similarity between the book and the movie is that the plot is very much the same. Quite often in book-to-movie adaptations, the movie has the same characters and some similar plot elements, but it seems that very few movies are a solid visual representation of what the book actually is. To Kill a Mockingbird, the movie, is a very good representation of the book in many ways: the actors accurately portray their characters, all the major plot points are shown, and the setting is the same. However, the way in which the movie and the book portray certain emotions or depict different scenes is, what I would consider, the greatest difference. In the book, the only way to describe scenes and characters and emotions is through words.
While this was occurring Tom ran out of the house because he was confused. The Ewells came up with a story stating that Tom raped Mayella and they went to court for it. Eventually, it was found out that Mayella lied to hide the embarrassment of trying to kiss an African American man along with trying to make herself feel better. Bob Ewell wanted to accuse Tom to cover his own tracks in abusing his daughter. Yet, with all this information and evidence Tom’s verdict was guilty.
Mayella accused Tom of rape, which was proven false but the jury decided to choose the voice of a white girl over a black man, which was common during this period of time. The jury then found Tom Robinson guilty, then sentenced Tom to prison. Some may say that Tom Robinson was at fault for entering the Ewell household but Mayella asked tom to come inside, and help her with some tasks which then started the accusations of Tom Raping Maylla Ewell. Tom only helped Mayella because he was black and he wanted to stay on her good side which unfortunately did not happen. Mayella spoke against Tom which caused the jury to find him guilty.
When he was announcing the final verdict, “Judge Taylor was polling the jury: ‘guilty… guilty… guilty… guilty…” (Lee 112). Before the trial even happened, “Tom was a dead man the minute Mayella Ewell opened her mouth and screamed” meaning he knew he was not going to win (Lee 128). The jury was biased from the beginning because it was all white. The case wasn't fair because Tom never had a chance of winning because he was going up against a white man and a white man would always win against a black man.
He knew Mayella was lying just to protect her father. Mayella did not want her father to do anything worse to her, causing her to blame it on Tom Robinson. Tom Robinson, is guilty of assaulting a white woman, Mayella Ewell. Everyone in that court knew that they made the decision based on the color Tom’s skin
They had to deal with knowing an innocent man died of a crime he didn’t commit because he was black. They watched life unfold before their eyes. These two literature pieces showed how people don’t obey the human rights and how negative things happened.
Tom was accused of raping a white woman who was Mayella Ewell, Mayella said he raped her while he was helping her with chores. She later on tells the readers that it was false allegations. The reason why she didn 't tell the truth at her first trial was because, Mayella was afraid of being embarrassed because she kissed a black male. She rather have an innocent man get charged with a crime than that. “However, Robinson was transferred from the state prison to Maycomb 's county jail on Saturday, two days before he stood trial on Monday, and Atticus had to defend him against a lynch mob”.
The Ewells could have been lying because most likely Mayella tempted Tom. Back then if you were involved with a colored person you were disgraced by the whole town. Mayella could have been trying to cover this up and get Tom arrested so he wouldn't be able to tell anyone. The jury convicted Tom Robinson because he was colored and back then white people believed they had to stick together against the colored people. This shows that based on the evidence Tom Robinson was only convicted because of his skin color.
Mayella Ewell hints at an uglier relationship with her father than is ever revealed, and along her guilt and pressure from her father, she puts the blame for the abuse on a black man who could easily be convicted, setting Bob Ewell free. Mayella was lonely, and frequently tried to talk with Tom Robinson, “As Tom Robinson gave his testimony, it came to me that Mayella Ewell must have been the loneliest person in the world...: white people wouldn't have anything to do with her because she lived among pigs; Negroes would have anything to do with her because she was white...” (Doc E). Mayella's own guilt and self-conscious force her to claim Tom Robinson has raped her so that he will be taken away and she will no longer be tempted. The Ewells seemed to have picked Tom Robinson as the man to blame because he was black, and blacks rarely won court cases over
In the novel To Kill A Mockingbird by Harper Lee, Tom Robinson and Arthur “Boo” Radley are two characters who represent the mockingbird. In the midst of finding who Boo truly is, Atticus Finch explains to his children, Jem and Scout, that it is a sin to kill the bird because they don’t do anything but make music. As the story progresses, and the two “mockingbirds” are being accused and attacked both verbally and physically, the identity of the mockingbirds surfaces. Tom Robinson was a crippled African American man whose left arm was a foot shorter than his right, where it was caught in a cotton gin.
Many people live their lives looking through the same pair of lens, but those who desire a more interesting and pleasurable lifestyle view the world from fresh perspectives, such as through the eyes and ideas of other people. Seeing things from a different point of view helps individuals interpret problems and conflicting situations with a more diverse mindset and may resolve them quicker. Apart from everyday life, many pieces of literature highlight how the world is seen through the eyes of different minds. In writings such as To Kill a Mockingbird, many settings are implemented where the characters must put themselves in the shoes of others to truly understand the nature of the situation. Introduction: “Perspective gives us the ability to accurately contrast the large with the small, and the important with the less important. Without it we are lost in a world where all ideas, news, and information look the same. We cannot differentiate, we cannot prioritize, and we cannot make good choices…” This is a quote recited by John Sununu. In books, we must be able to compare and contrast the difference between one sequence from the other; from one context to the next.
When Mayella, and Bob Ewell, lie to the jury, they do it to make themselves look good. They went out of their way to make an official case about the scenario. Therefore it put Tom Robinson’s own life on trial for something he did not commit. Bob, got to do The only reason Mayella, and what they did, was because of the racial discrimination during that time. Everything that took place in the courtroom shows the loss of childhood innocence and extreme racial prejudice.
Tom Robinson is a young African-American who's been accused of raping and abusing Mayella Ewell, a young and closeted white woman. Racial discrimination is hinted throughout Tom’s trial as Atticus Finch explains to Jem that a white man’s word will always win over that of a black man’s - "... In our courts, when it's a white man's word against a black man's, the white man always wins. They're ugly, but those are the facts of life" (220). Atticus explains to Jem that in the courts of Maycomb, a black man’s state of innocence or guilt is truly determined by a white man’s testimony.
The saddening thing is, that the whole scenario started because Mayella attempted to seduce Tom, and her father found out. Filled with rage, Mr. Ewell beat his daughter, he found it unacceptable that his daughter fancied a black man. Then, he claimed that Tom raped his daughter to cover everything up. There are even cases such as Tom’s happening to this day, such as the case of Miguel Angel Peña Rodriguez Vs. Colorado. The jury was corrupted by bias thoughts which resulted in an unfair trial.
