In the novel Where the Heart Is by Billie Letts, there are two main characters named Novalee Nation and Forney Hull. Letts explain a story about a young pregnant girl’s journey. In this story, Novalee and Forney get along well and develop a close relationship. Although they have a great relationship, they have a few similarities and differences. Some of the similarities featured in the novel are the two characters’ personal growth and interest in books, and the difference between the two characters is their level of education.

The first similarity the two characters share is their personal growth during the novel. At the beginning of the novel, Novalee was homeless, jobless, and pregnant, with no idea what she would do. Throughout the …show more content…

During the novel, he develops a relationship with Novalee and her baby. "He would read for thirty minutes exactly, a different author each night" (Letts, 116). This shows that Forney showed personal growth once Americus came along. Forney developed a relationship with Americus and played a fatherly role. I think this shows personal growth because he went from a shy guy who kept to himself to someone who allowed himself to be vulnerable and developed a bond with Americus and Novalee. The educational differences are shown in certain quotes throughout this novel. "It happened right after she dropped out of school and started waiting tables at Red’s, a job that didn’t have anything to do with sevens" (Letts, 3). She had dropped out of high school; therefore, she had limited education. Unlike Novalee, Forney was very educated. "Oh, he’s a brilliant man. Just brilliant (Letts, 67). Forney learned just about everything he needed to know through books. He also saw him work as a temporary librarian when his sister was sick.
