Poseidon liked to claim coastal cities as his own since he was god of the sea. Once, Poseidon and Athena went head to head over ownership of a city which would later be named after the victor. The story goes that Athena and Poseidon held a contest to see which one would be able to control the beautiful coastal city. Poseidon raised his hand and made a stream. When the people drank from the stream it turned out to be saltwater, not freshwater.

Poseidon is one God against him. Poseidon does everything he can to keep him away from home till Odysseus learns a lesson that Poseidon was trying to get to him. Many Gods also try to help Odysseus, one very helpful one being the god of the wind, Aeolus. Aeolus gives him a sack of wind which helps Odysseus get home but the problem with that. You only get one use out of it so if you open it when you don’t have good timing.
After having Odysseus tell the Phaeacian all his troubles after the Trojan War and having to land on their island, the King of the Phaeacian, Alcinous, offered to help Odysseus to get back home. Alcinous sent some of his men to travel with Odysseus. As the ship was away and traveling back home, Poseidon talked to Zeus, about a plan that he has for the Phaeacian after helping Odysseus and dishonoring him. His plan was to destroy the beautiful ship of the Phaeacians and ring a mountain around their city. Zeus had his part on the disastrous plan as well, he tells Poseidon to “wait until the people are watching the ship sail into the harbor”, then “turn the ship into stone near the shore” and then to raise the ring of mountains around the island (95).
By boasting about taking Polyphemus’ eye out, he evoked his own misfortune. Poseidon avenged his son by trying to prevent Odysseus from returning home guiding him towards many dangerous
On our field trip to the Getty villa this semester, we had to choose an art piece that stood out to us among the many there. The task at hand seemed easier than it was, as there were many art pieces that held my attention. One thing I kept in mind was that many of the Greek art pieces were either recovered from the bottom of the sea or were Roman duplicates. This meant finding background and details about them would be challenging. Of the art pieces, the Statue of Hercules or the “Lansdowne Herakles” was the one that I chose to write about.
She was unique and charming, in the best of ways. Poseidon knew Zeus would not be too happy with him, but he believed he could manage to talk him into it. In fact, the next morning, he went and spoke to him about it. At first, Zeus was exceptionally critical about it. However, Poseidon then brought up the story of Zeus and Hera.
One time, Poseidon chained Zeus up with the aid of Hera, Zeus’s wife, because he was thought of as an unruly god. Another myth is that Poseidon mated with Medusa to create Pegasus, the winged horse. A naval power that offended Poseidon was Crete. When its ruler, King Minos, asked the sea god for a sign, a white bull emerged from the waves. A religious custom required King Minos to sacrifice the bull, but he did not.
The Hunger Games: A Modern Day Odyssey? The Hunger Games is about a civilization that randomly selects two members from the different districts. Those two members are then forced to fight in an “arena” in which there is only one victor. In a way the Hunger Games is very similar to the Odyssey. The Odyssey begins years after the Trojan War has ended and Odysseus has not returned home.
However, Zeus saw the two sides of the gods’ feelings towards Odysseus. “‘Great Odysseus/ who excels all men in wisdom... it’s the Earth-Shaker, Poseidon, unappeased,/ forever fuming against him..’” (1.78-83). Zeus created an equilibrium so that Poseidon could take out his anger on Odysseus through punishment, and Athena receives the duty of making sure Odysseus gets home to Ithaca.
As mystery author Dan Brown said, “No love is greater than that of a father for his son.” In The Odyssey by Homer, father/son relationships play a strong role, the most prominent being Odysseus and Telemachus, Odysseus and Laertes, and Polyphemus and Poseidon. These relationships drive many major parts of the story these relationships display characteristics that the Greeks valued. The Odyssey focuses on these relationships which shows that they are central to the story, and the characteristics that the relationships display are the characteristics that were valued by the Greeks. The father/son relationships between Odysseus and Telemachus, Odysseus and Laertes, and Polyphemus and Poseidon in the Odyssey are very important to the story, and
Throughout his voyage, Poseidon delayed him of returning home by providing strong storm on the sea which caused the ship to destroy. Poseidon did not only delay his homecoming, but made him face different dangers and also saved him from the Trojan war. Zeus was the king of the gods who intervenes in dispute between gods and also men. He also has the power to make other gods do what he pleases. In his role in odyssey, he sent Hermes to order calypso to release Odysseus to return to Ithaca.
Through thorough analysis of Zeus’ interaction with Prometheus in both Hesiod’s Theogony and Aeschylus’ Prometheus Bound, this essay will be able to clarify which one of the authors had the most accurate
Hercules and Theseus, two great heroes from mythology, seem to be similar in many ways. Both extremely brave and noble; with a love of danger and adventure mixed with compassion, creates the perfect heroes. Their stories intertwine with one another’s when Hercules has to save Theseus from the chair of forgetfulness in Hades. Theseus saved Hercules when he was distraught with intent to kill himself. In a similar way, they both stood by their friends no matter the cost.
Zeus and Odin have many similarities, however their differences set them apart from each other. For every difference between Greek and Norse mythology, there is as many similarities.
