The notion of alternative facts has been called so many things such as falsehoods, untruths and delusions (dictionerary.com, 2018).This essay will therefore, compare and contrast how each speaker is positioned in text 1, 2, 3 and 4 with regards to alternative facts. The first distinguishing factor between the speakers of the four texts is the context.. The context of text 1, 2 and 4, is political context because it concerns the Donald Trump; in contrast the context of text 3 is communication because it is informing the reader what led to the fake news. The context of text 1, 2, 4 is political because in both texts, the speakers are trying to explain what “alternative facts” are. Text 1, 2 and 3 share the same topic of “Alternative facts” while speaker of text 3 uses the title “fake news”. However, these four speakers are talking about alternative facts because “fake news” is also defined as alternative facts. The speakers also differ in their writing styles, Speakers of text 1 and 2 uses persuasive style of writing. Persuasive writing is the style of writing whereby the writer convinces the reader to agree with a certain idea (Zindela, 2013, 2). The last speaker in text one says “There’s no such thing, unfortunately anymore, of facts. The speaker is trying his best to convince the other party that facts are not real. In the same way, speaker of text 2 says “….Alternative facts are not facts; they’re falsehoods. The speakers add their opinion making the text persuasive. In contrast with text 1 and 2, speakers of text 3 and 4 uses expository style of writing. Expository text is the text which tries to explain, describe or inform readers about a particular phenomenon (Meer 2016). The speaker in text 3 is informing the public the fake news that Donald trump supported Geun-Hye. On the other hand, speaker in text 4 is trying to inform the reader the role that journalism play in alternative facts.
