So far in AP Language and Composition, we have learned how to critically analyze texts using rhetorical and literary analysis. I feel comfortable with literary analysis because of how frequently and often I have been doing it in the past couple of years. Regarding rhetorical analysis we have learned diverse types of appeals used in rhetoric, appealing to a reader’s emotions using pathos, an ethical appeal using ethos, or appealing to a reader’s logic using logos. These skills and concepts are completely new to me and I am still beginning to understand how to use these appeals in my writing strategically. However, I feel more confident in finding these appeals in other rhetorical texts, including ads and speeches, because of how much practice

Their main model in this book is they say/I say template, in which it helps writers to develop their arguments by paying attention to what others are saying, and engaging with a response. The authors goal is to demystify academic writing, and return it to its social and conversational roots. The authors want the writers to engage in the ideas of others. These concepts from this book, will help make a stronger, supportive argument.
Our weaknesses and tendencies while composing documents are clearly revealed in the tutorial. As we compose work that frequently relies on the ideas of others, the benefits of understanding our tendencies are indispensable while avoiding plagiarism. Personally, I have decided to capitalize on summarizing and direct quotations, while marginalizing my use of paraphrases. Coming into RCC 200 in August, I felt confident as a writer in my ability to articulate my thoughts into a well-developed essay. However as with any student, I knew that I had plenty of room to improve, most notably in regards to formulating a strong thesis, descriptive body, and well-summarized conclusion, and was fortunate to have countless sources to guide me throughout the semester. At the conclusion of two months of practice, I have learned several new techniques of how to properly convey my writing across various forms of papers, which is best exemplified when comparing my annotated bibliography to my i-search paper. What was most challenging about my annotated bibliography was my lack of ability to apply college level strategies across several aspects of my paper. In hindsight, it is understandable as to how I was unable to express myself in a more coherent manor as I was not yet introduced to tools such as our class book They Say I Say, assistance from tutors at the writing center, or valuable expertise from college professors.
In this short passage by William Zinsser, Zinsser used compare and contrast to inform the readers about his personal opinions of being a writer. Due to different understandings and opinions on how to be a good writer, Zinsser decided to use compare and contrast in order to present a clean and detailed differences to the reader about how different people’s writing style can vary. By doing this, it would be extremely helpful for the readers to distinguish the differences of each writing style, see the benefits and disadvantages, and ultimately gather enough information to decide which style fits them the best. At the panel with Dr. Brock, Zinsser gave the audience a broader view of different writing styles and how they contribute differently.

Formal writing is taken to be a serious one without notations of relaxed and friendly language. According to (Heylighen and Dewaele 41) a formal style is usually characterized by accuracy, rigidity, detachment, and heaviness. This is in contrast to informal writing which is, on the other hand, direct, flexible, implicit and involved though less informative. Formality in Academic writing is highly regarded for it helps in evading misinterpretation and ambiguity in the resulting work. Formality is associated with some concept such as colloquial language (Hundt and Mair 223).such is a language that is used in day to day activities by ordinary people.
