Authors use characters for creative purposes and to convey messages. They also use characters to form stories, examine the dangers or choices these characters have to make, and are used to develop themes. Moreover, characters have to to possess qualities that readers can relate to. In the case of "A Rose for Emily" and "The Jilting of Granny Weatherall" , the main characters and how the roles they play center on the loss of love, repression and grudges, and how they can turn a soul into something unrecognizable is analyzed. Emily and Granny had a first love, which they lost, and then found a new love. Emily’s first love was her father, and when he died she was devastated until she met Homer, but then she killed him. Granny's first love was George, but then he jilted her at their wedding, and left her feeling depressed. Then she met and they married John and had children but then he died. Another similarity is that Emily and Granny hid their love lifes. Emily did not have friends to talk to when her father died or when she killed Homer, and Granny never told her children about her jilting. …show more content…
Another difference between these women is Granny was independent unlike Emily who was dependent. Emily wasn't strong to handle the death of her father. She lost her mind and let his body rot in her house for three days until she accepted his passing. When Homer came into her life he became significant to her and when she found out he was going to leave her, she killed him so he wouldn't leave her. Also, Granny did not confuse illusion with reality when it came to love, besidess the fact that she could not forget George. Which made her love turn to hate, made her want to show George what she had done with her life. She wanted George to believe she was better off without him, when really she was trying to cover the hole he left her
