In the poem Do not weep, maiden, for war is kind by Stephen Crane, Stephen talks about the aspects of war and the effects it has on people outside of the war. Another poem called the sonnet-ballad by Gwendolyn Brooks, talks about a woman who has just lost her lover do to the war and is asking her mother where happiness is. In both texts, the authors focus on the negative and how cruel war really is. Although the authors focus the the horrific parts of war, Brooks sees beauty in war and how tempting it is. Also, he wrote about his dying wife. The author uses personification and symbolism to create a Dark Mood that reveals a theme that death is never the answer to solve your problems.
Perhaps it was natural intuition that instilled a sense of finality in today’s resting. It would be their last day of refuge spent besides each other and in this moment they were at peace with those odds. Poe had grown weak. Before Henry, there were years of spent misery that failed to tear apart his weathered limbs. Recently, we have read three individual poems that talked about death in their own unique perspective. Though being afraid of death is incredibly common, losing someone you care about deeply affects your mindset. ‘Annabel Lee’ describes a tale about a male losing the love of his life to the wind ‘chilling and killing’ her. Granted that this was definitely written for every woman that Edgar Allan Poe adored and passed away because of Tuberculosis, he also blames angels that turned evil from heaven in the text.
The poem, “Annabel Lee” by Edgar Allan Poe dramatizes the theme of everlasting love. The use of contrasting diction effectively conveys this message. For example, the speaker states, “That the wind came out of the cloud by night, / Chilling and killing my Annabel Lee” (26-26). Poe uses the wind to represent a disease, such as tuberculosis. In addition, the choice of the words, “chilling” and “killing” and the use of cacophony emphasize Annabel Lee’s death and the effect it had on the speaker.
Death can never be escaped no matter what. In “The Masque of the Red Death” Edgar Allan Poe shows the theme of death, a suspenseful mood, and an ominous tone. Through Poe’s use of literary devices, the reader can discover tone, theme, and mood. Throughout Poe’s life he experienced death with two of his mother’s and his young wife. Death is shown how inevitable it is with Poe’s writing and experiences combined together.
The American poet, Edgar Allan Poe writes many short stories and poems about his tragic and sorrowful life. In his famous poem, “To One in Paradise,” Poe describes a dreadful event that occurred in which his adored loved one passed away. In this poem he utilizes frantic word choice to mirror his own panic, complex and compelling comparisons to provide the reader with a similar experience and a passionate attitude to express his inner feelings regarding the loss of his soul mate more vividly. The ending of this poem- from my point of view- was tragic yet strangely engaging for the audience. I can only simply accept that their love was not one to be long-lived , as it was forbidden. Although Annabel died in the end I cannot fault the poet, because even though she didn’t live a long life in which I pictured her growing old with Poe, I came to realise it didn’t matter. Poe would still continue to love her as he did before and to me, that was the beauty of it all, that he was able to love her regardless of her death.

Poe experienced lots of loss as a young man. He lost multiple people he loved throughout his life. Some most of the important poems he wrote was the “The Raven” and “Annabel Lee”. Poe carried his idea of death throughout these poems to capture his common themes, which was death and loss.
The Lenore his love can represent someone who is very dear to us and whom when we lose them we will grieve a lot. Poe on the other hand represent the true person who has to bear the loss and go through various stages of losses from denial to anger displacement to even depression. It was very wise of the author ton leave out the suicide part since it would mean that people who grieve after the loss of a loved one will always end up in depression followed by suicide. A critic once said that Poe wrote and knew that any type of love had to come with loss (Kennedy). This showed a lot about Poe’s life as everyone that he loved he actually did lose. In the “Fall of the House of Usher,” Roderick Usher prematurely buries his sister, Madeline Usher, because he thinks she has died from an unknown illness. Poe describes the burial as, “We replaced and screwed down the lid, and having secured the door of iron, made out the way with the toll…” (Poe 425). When Roderick bolted the iron lid upon his sister’s coffin, all trust that had previously been built between the two had been broken. In Poe’s life, after the burial of his wife and mother, he felt like he could never trust anyone as well.
However, for Poe, death is poetical. And not just any death, but rather the death of a beautiful woman— by beautiful we will assume he refers to the women he admires, the women he found beautiful on the inside, because death is also the end of all external appearances. In any case, if one is familiar with Poe’s style, we will know that the death motif was nothing new in his stories, neither was the death of his female characters. Nevertheless, to understand why he had the audacity of presenting the death of a woman as something poetical, it is necessary to know more about his personal life.
