In the poetry of the three authors, Anne Bradstreet, Michael Wigglesworth and Samuel Danforth, there are numerous expressions of conventional Christian sentiment throughout. One convention that is similar among all of the puritan poets is the quality of righteousness. Their preoccupation with interpreting god word and living by these standard can be seen in the writing of all three poets. Their reasons for living clean, moral life is because they believed that they would not only be judged for what they did in their mortal life, but also in the afterlife. Although they believed that god had predetermined who was going to heaven and who was going to hell, they thought that if you did not follow the word of god, it would lead to ultimate damnation.

On the other hand Edwards goes on to explain how pitiful it would be for the sinners to miss out on the glorious celebrations up in heaven and spend the rest of eternity in the fiery vortex of pain and suffering that is hell. All because they did not repent their misdeeds while refusing to follow the holy ways of God. This form of persuasion is meant to strike fear into the Puritans hearts because this means that there is a great possibility that each individual is not worthy of God's love and that they will miss out on the glorious reservation in heaven because they are not good enough for God's

Well Bradstreet and Edwards are both Puritans and have a strong faith even though Bradstreet's faith came throughout her experiences in life and Edwards was born into it. They both believe that there are strict rules on how to be obedient and a good servant in the eyes of god. Jonathan Edwards, a Puritan preacher, wrote the sermon Sinners in the Hands of an Angry God his sermon is very dark, scary, and mean. Both Anne Bradstreet and Jonathan Edwards have respect for God, but they also have different views of him. The authors both have different writing styles, but use similar literary devices.
Jonathon Edwards is another great writer with similar influences as William Bradford and John Winthrop. Bradford and Winthrop writings were influenced through the old beliefs under the Puritan religion such as God is supreme, and nature is evil. However, Edward’s beliefs stem from the Puritan religion, the beliefs and writings are of new beliefs under the Enlightened thought. Edwards, though born in the new world, was well known for his fire and brimstone preaching. He became known as the nature of God preacher because he believed God is revealed in nature and is knowable through reason and natural laws.
Jonathan Edwards depicts God as a wrathful, harsh and aggressive deity. His sermon emphasizes on the importance of salvation and remorse. Reflecting Puritan ideals, he expresses Gods vision of humans. How people are instinctive sinners and God is the only one able to determine those worthy of salvation. His stated principles construe the main pillar of their religion, predestination.

Bradstreet and Edwards both had strong faith but they had different ways of interpreting it. Bradstreet’s faith was more compassionate and she thought God was loving and caring. For example, the narrator states, “And to my God my heart did cry to strengthen me in my distress and not to leave me succorless" (Bradstreet The Burning 8-10). She is asking God to help her through a hard time and she believes that God will help her. Bradstreet also believed that if she believed in God and followed him, she would go to heaven someday.

Jonathan Edwards’s sermon “Sinners in the Hands of an Angry God” and Anne Bradstreet’s “Upon the Burning of Our House” seem at first glance quite similar to one another regarding context, however, after taking a closer look, it becomes apparent that there are some substantial differences. These differences cannot be understood without the knowledge of cultural context concerning the Puritan belief system and their lifestyle. “Sinners in the Hands of an Angry God” was written with the sole purpose of scaring and intimidating the people that purtinans believed to be sinners. Edwards’s work contributed to a movement called “The Great Awakening”. It’s objective was to make the so-called ‘sinners’ aware of their wrongdoings and compel them to repent.
Puritans are a people with a very strong belief in both God and the power of God. When people see power, they interpret it in different ways. Some know of power through anger and impulse, while others see power through the goodness the powerful one shows. Although Anne Bradstreet and Jonathan Edwards are both puritan poets, their writings convey mainly different, though sometimes similar, views on God because they have different perceptions of His will and the use of His power. The Puritans were extremely neat and strict; so much that they were not very focused on the importance of their religion. Johnathan Edwards, the author of the sermon, “Sinners in the Hands of an Angry God,” believed that New Englanders were too concerned with other worldly matters. When he noticed the separation of his religion, he wrote and delivered his most famous speech. It was a dark and powerful sermon, delivered to multiple churches in New England.

They both are powerful writers and have a way of getting their points across, but they do it differently. They are both great writers and even though they have different religious views and different writing styles both of their poems, “Upon the Burning of Our House” by Anne Bradstreet and “Sinners in the Hands of an Angry God” by Jonathan Edwards, have the same goal of converting people.
