For something to be declared great it must achieve a particular standard that rises considerably above average. In the field of philosophy there are few as great as Socrates; in the world of books, there are very few that have been considered great. Throughout history, books have been created in order to spark discussion on particular issues and to share stories with others in numerous ways. While there are countless good books, it is much more difficult to recognize a book as great. Most great books contain several similar characteristics such as a high quality of language, complexity of theme, and memorableness. Books like “Anthem” by Ayn Rand, “1984” by George Orwell, and “Fahrenheit 451” by Ray Bradbury have given birth to the ever-popular dystopian genre found in famous novels and their film-adaptations like “The Hunger Games” by Suzanne Collins and “The Maze Runner” by James Dashner today. In my opinion, the Harry Potter series by J.K. Rowling should be among the greats in history. The book, while very modern, may not carry the same sense of greatness as some older books but it truly deserves the acknowledgement. Harry Potter brought life to the fantasy genre and became a global phenomenon in modern culture. A great book, simply put, is a book that is able to have a global impact and and be unique and influential in its own way. While Harry Potter did not necessarily aid an independence movement, the books have sparked the imaginations of an entire generation of readers around the world. The film adaptations of the books have also led to the production of countless fantasy films in recent years and truly opened up an incredible genre in a massive way. This series shows that for a book to be great, it need not be one of the first books ever
