Barnes and Noble faces different threats, mainly Amazon and independent bookstores. Amazon is starting to open brick-and-mortar stores to compete with Barnes and Noble stores. So far it hasn’t done too well for them but it is something Barnes and Noble should keep aware of. Amazon has their Kindle to compete with the Nook, both devices that allow people to read e-books. The number of Amazon prime members is rising and one of its main benefits is free two day shipping, which might make customers lean towards ordering books online through them.

Some people prefer these shops over Barnes and Noble because it has more of an at-home, cozy feeling which is what Barnes and Noble has to incorporate into their stores somehow. Barnes and Noble has to focus on what they do offer – the experience. In regards to the value proposition, they need to provide an unforgettable experience in the bookstore while increasing brand awareness and making better use of their space. To take advantage of this digital era, they could start a social media campaign where college students will be encouraged to post a picture of them reading their favorite book or textbook in a creative place on their college campus. The most creative picture will then be featured on the Barnes and Noble website and the winner will receive a $100 Starbucks gift card. Even with declining sales and Amazon being the powerhouse that it is, the future can be bright for Barnes and Noble. They need to keep up to date with consumer insights and work with what they have.
