Comparing Baz Luhrmann's Romeo And Juliet

Romeo and Juliet meet at a party and fall deeply in love. But, their families hate each other. They think they will never get married. But, helped by Friar Laurence, they marry secretly. Unfortunately, right before their wedding, Romeo kills Juliet's cousin, Tybalt, in a duel, and in the morning he is banished and was told, if he ever returns to the city, he will be killed. Juliet's parents demand her to marry Paris. She refuses and refuses, but later agrees because she has a plan to fake her death and run away to be with Romeo forever. Juliet is given a sleeping potion. She appears to be dead and was put in a tomb. However, Romeo does not know about the plan and thinks she is dead and kills himself. Baz Luhrmann uses dialog in order to show the romance and connection that is between Romeo and Juliet. When Nurse reveals Romeo's identity: “My only love sprung from my only hate. Too early seen unknown, and known too late” (1.5 140-141). In this quote the viewer can hear Juliet say that her only hate became her only love. Which means that Juliet has an eye for Romeo and that’s who she wants to be with, even though their two families are in a major feud. Baz Luhrmann uses dialog in order to show the love and attraction that Romeo has for Juliet. When Romeo sees her arising from the window: “But, soft! what light through yonder window breaks? It is the east, and Juliet is the sun” (2.2 1-3). Romeo is comparing Juliet as to the sun where Romeo is facing east and seeing her rise from her room to the window as a sun rises in the morning. Romeo is also stating that Juliet is glowing in beauty. With the use of amazing dialog in the 1996 version of Romeo and Juliet the viewer can see that the romance level is a little bit higher than the 1968 version because of the tone that is
