MLK was a very powerful writer and speaker. He wrote many articles and did many speeches. His “I Have A Dream” speech and his “Letter From Birmingham Jail” were probably his two best. In this writing I am going to compare these two articles with their use of Logos and Pathos. Dr. King did a better job in his “I Have A Dream” speech than his “Letter From Birmingham Jail” because he used more and better examples of Pathos in his speech.

In his tear-jerking, mind-opening letter, King manages to completely discredit every claim made by the clergymen while keeping a polite and formal tone. Metaphors, allusions, and rhetorical questions are used in the most skillful way to support his argument and ultimately convince his audience of the credibility behind his emotional, yet factual, claims.

Although King was arrested for a nonviolent protest, he still found a way to justify his actions with the use of logos and pathos. MLK uses both ways to gain the attention and agreement of the audience but, he uses pathos not just more, but in a more relatable way in order to appeal to his audience.

Because of his skill in creating such pieces of writing, as well as his influential role within the Civil Rights Movement, and the reminder that Letter from Birmingham Jail provides of these trying times, his letter should continue to be included within A World of Ideas. Persuasion within writing is an important tool to be utilized in order to garner support for one’s position. During the 1960s, equality between different races was a very controversial issue which required a certain finesse when being discussed. Martin Luther King demonstrated precisely this sort of finesse when writing about the racial injustices faced by black Americans, as well as when refuting the criticisms he faced from white clergymen.
Civil Disobedience by Thoreau is the refusal to obey government demands or commands and nonresistance to consequent arrest and punishment this had an extreme effect on Martin Luther King Jr and Mahatma Gandhi. They were fighting for different beliefs. However they both had the same believes about civil disobedience and they both end in the same place, jail. In the first place Gandhi believed that the only way to confronted injustice was with non-violent methods.

Tolkien comes The Lord of the Rings, a story about a powerful ring and how the main protagonist, Frodo, will destroy in Mount Doom. The long journey is both mentally and physically straining as Frodo comes across many difficulties along the way while the ring slowly corrupts his mind. By the end of the series the ring is destroyed but Frodo does not head back home because of how much he changed. Frodo Baggins is hero because he saves many people by destroying the ring, despite that Frodo is not a confident character, but this is a minor flaw that can be easily overlooked.
