Brooklyn Hunt Mr. Ioannidis, 5th Hr. English 10B 21 May 2024 Antony vs. Brutus Diving into Antony’s and Brutus speeches. Brutus’ speech had been given after he and the conspirators had killed Caesar. Brutus talked rudely about Caesar, while Antony praised Caesar. Brutus stated that Caesar was ambitious and was a tyranny. Antony stated that Caesar was a great person, and had good intentions and leadership. But in the end it was who manipulated the Roman people better and got them on their side. “Caesar was ambitious” said Brutus, which was said in many different ways. Brutus wanted to manipulate the crowd, but so did Antony. “As Caesar loved me, I weep for him; as he was fortunate, I rejoice at it; as he was valiant, I honor him; but as he was ambitious, I slew him” …show more content…
“Even putting irrelevant details into an argument to distract from the real issue (red herring)” (Huff and Geis). Antony could counter what Brutus could say with ethos, the people of Rome trust Antony more so they would believe what Antony would say over anyone else because he has more credibility than anyone. “Ethos, in summary, are the guiding beliefs and principles we subscribe to as people, a community, an organisation or what have you” (“THE ART OF RHETORIC - HOW TO SPEAK MORE PERSUASIVELY”) Caesar was ambitious, but he was also loving and caring. Antony and Brutus had won the crowd over, but Antony spoke more truth than Brutus did and had a lot more emotion and connected with the crowd better. Brutus spoke a lot of facts and used a lot of logos, and ethos. He used some pathos, but not enough to convince the crowd to trust him over anyone else. Antony had persuaded the crowd in a whole different way than Brutus did and that’s what made the crowd side with Antony. But the crowd didn’t have their own opinion and was easily swayed/manipulated by the both of
