In Thunder Rolling in the Mountains, the Nez Perce are being forced to leave their homes by the Blue Coats. When they left, they began to go to war with the Blue Coats because they refused to go to the reservation. Chief Joseph and Sound of Running Feet are the major characters that push the story along. Like about Chief Joseph “my father told them to hide in the brush” (Pg. 72) when there were white people in the camp. He wants to keep his people safe. That is how they both want to keep their people safe. Although Chief Joseph never liked war and Sound of Running Feet always wanted to be a warrior, but in the end her beliefs changed. Sound of Running Feet said “I saw myself. shoot a soldier from his horse” (Pg. 17) when they had to go away from their home because of the white soldiers. She is sad she has to move, she wants to stay and fight, but Chief Joseph said “No daughter. We’re few, and there are many. They’re locusts and they’ll devour us.” (Pg. 17) When Sound of Running Feet and Chief Joseph were arguing about whether they should have war. He believes war is bad. He does not like war. In the end, Sound of Running Feet changed her beliefs from liking war to not liking war because a lot of her people died. Chief Joseph and Sound of Running Feet both want to keep their people safe.
