Cyrano de Bergerac and Quasimodo are similar characters in the different worlds of Cyrano de Bergerac by Edmond Rostand and The Hunchback of Notre Dame by Victor Hugo. Cyrano and Quasimodo both are judged as ugly and unattractive, love someone "out of their league", kill many people in battle by themselves, and they help the girl they love with a guy she loves. Characters from different stories can share so many similar qualities. These stories may have shared a similar inspiration. But the stories are very different despite a possible similar inspiration. Quasimodo and Cyrano are judged as ugly, unattractive guys. Cyrano looks unattractive. His nose acts as the main reason for his scrutiny. Cyrano's nose is abnormally larger than a normal person's nose which makes him unattractive. He even believed he was ugly. “My friend, I have my bitter days, Knowing myself so ugly, so alone.” (Rostand 49) Society deemed Quasimodo unattractive just like Cyrano. Cyrano helps Roxane with Christian. Roxane asked Cyrano to protect Christian during the war. Roxane was afraid she would lose Christian during the war. Cyrano agreed to protect Christian even though he did not want to. “Oh well-I will defend Your little Baron.” (Rostand 76) Christian was mean to Cyrano the first time they met. He continually made fun of his nose. Cyrano probably should not have agreed to protect Christian the way he had been treated. But, Cyrano loves Roxane. He is willing to do just about any thing for her. Quasimodo helps Esmeralda with Phoebus. Esmeralda asks Quasimodo to bring Phoebus to her when she sees him from Notre Dame. Quasimodo agrees and attempts to bring Phoebus to her. Esmeralda should have forgotten about Phoebus. Quasimodo saved her and cared for her. The only thing Phoebus did was try and kiss her. Quasimodo did not care. No matter what she did, he still cared for her until her
