From the birds and butterflies around us to the computers and tablets we now have, makes all the difference in the world. Nature and Technology. Most of the time, people would easily choose technology, but in both the excerpt from Dandelion Wine and the short story “The Third Level”, nature is supposed to be valued. The authors develop the main theme of the story through the setting and plot.

In “The Third Level” by Jack Finney, the author develops the theme of nature and technology through the plot of the story. He shows how the plot is peaceful even when they had no technology. Finney reveals the theme because Charley is spending a lot of time trying to find a portal to take him back to Gettysburg where he can get away from modern day life. For example, the Charley states, “... but he explained that he meant the modern world is full of insecurity, fear, war, worry, and all the rest of it, and that I just want to escape.” This shows that Charley wanted to escape from the modern world because he was unhappy. In the Dandelion Wine excerpt, the grandpa and the other man are sitting outside on the porch talking. The porch doesn’t really have to relate to how Bill should spend more time in nature. Therefore, for this story the setting is not important to help develop the theme. On the contrary, in “The Third Level”, Charley finds a time portal which takes him back to Gettysburg where the setting is very peaceful and serene. There are people talking on a porch and every sight is very welcoming.
