Death is always the common thing that people need to face, and most of them would experience a feeling of regret when someone they know finally come to the end of life. Author Ursula K. LeGuin, Isaac Singer, and O. Henry also mentioned the experiences of death in their stories “Gwilan’s Harp,” “The Washwoman,” and “The Last Leaf.” In “Gwilan’s Harp”, Gwilan faced the death of her husband Torm before she realized don’t worry for the worldly things. The death of the washwoman made Singer deliberated deeply about living in a dignity life. The loss of Behrman motivated Johnsy and lightened the torch of “living” in her heart. These three were the articles that worth people to read since they both provided an interesting story for readers to read, and also told about the idea of death throughout the story. In the story of “Gwilan’s Harp”, Gwilan, an excellent harp player, faced the death of her husband Torm. They met each other when she experienced the loss of her ancestral harp during an accident. Henry, mentioned the death of Old Behrman, a poor painter. Two young painters Sue and Johnsy, lived a poor but happy life in the Washington Square. However, Johnsy faced a terrible disease called pneumonia, and lost her confidence on fighting with it. Thus Behrman tried to save Johnsy by painting a piece of leaf on the wall to encourage her. At the end of the story Johnsy got healed, but Behrman died because of the disease and coldness. But the death of Behrman lighted up the torch for continue living in Johnsy’s heart.
