My Mother and Father always tell me to not fear death because at some point it will come. They say I can not avoid it. I find it ironic that people fear the one thing in life that is going to happen no matter what. The fear of death is what pushes the two stories that will be compared in this essay. The irony in both deal with death and what people will do to keep from dying or to protect others from this inevitable occurrence. This essay will explain and compare the irony in “The Sniper” by Liam O’Flaherty, and “The Censors” by Luisa Valenzuela.

For example the sniper kills his brother while not knowing it was his brother. His brother must have meant a lot to him based on his reaction when he shot the person. If the man cried because he had just shot another person then he would be very upset when he found out the man was his brother. In “The Censor” the main character caused the death of himself and most likely caused the death of the recipient of the letter. This recipient was a good friend of the main character and he was willing to give up his life and job to stop the letter from hurting his friend, although at the end he didn’t think of her. The difference in the irony between the two stories is who they are fighting for. The sniper is fighting for his own survival. The censor is fighting for his survival and the survival of his friend.
In this essay, the irony in “The Censors” by Luisa Valenzuela, and “The Sniper” by Liam O’Flaherty have been compared and the similarities to the irony have been made evident.
