A wise man by the name of Desmond Tutu, once said, “Hope is being able to see that there is light despite all of the darkness.” For the sake of Dickson’s poem and the Trews’ song, this is not necessarily the case. Eventually throughout both poems, hope is lost and never again retrieved. Dickinson’s and the Trews approach to hope vary, but both significant meanings are realized in the end. While both Dickinson’s “Hope is the thing with feathers” and the Trews, “Hope & Ruin” illustrate losing hope, the Trews reveal hope diminishing through someone.

A line from the song reads, “Gone too soon” (Trews), demonstrating the repetition of the vowel sound, o. Also explaining she did not stay as long as he had hoped she would. She lost hope in the relationship, while he lost hope in her for leaving, and maybe even in his own life. Another way the Trews conveyed their message was through the use of a hyperbole or an exaggeration. Similar to Dickinson’s poem, the Trews write the same unhappy ending in their song, lost hope. A line from the poem reads “And it’s heavy now/And it weighs me down” (Trews) displaying how he felt when his girlfriend left. He was weighed down and burdened by his heartbreak. Also, notice the use of the word now, meaning he has not always felt that way, comparable to Dickinson’s poem. Dickinson, one of the most famous and well-known poets of all time, greatly portrayed the loss of hope within her use of academic language. The ending of the poem grew dark and sorrowful, invoking a darker side to Dickinson’s writing. The Trews also explored a more dark, yet meaningful side to a catchy song.
