Gothic fiction is characterised by the elements of horror, fear, death and gloom as well as romantic element, such as nature ,individuality and very large amount of emotion. Most of the emotions include suspense and fear. The stories, ‘Tell-Tale Heart’, ‘Don’t ask Jack’ and ‘The Sandman’ are all part of the gothic genre. The purpose of these story is to both entertain and scare the readers. “The Tell-Tale Heart” story is about a man who is put off by the eye of the old man that he lives with and is being slowly driven insane by it. “Don’t Ask Jack” is about four children that own a cursed Jack-in-a-box and there are many horrible stories about the cursed toy. The gothic/horror story “The Sandman” is about creature that is called the Sandman and steals the eyes of children who choose not to go to bed and feeds the eyes to his children that live on the moon. …show more content…

In the “Tell-Tale Heart” the setting is in the 1800s in a house where the old man is murdered by the narrator. Near the end of the story, the man who had the old man murdered hears the beating heart of the old man through the floor boards and is the only one to hear and is driven insane by the noise. “Don’t Ask Jack” is set in the attic of a nursery where four brothers and sisters play with the toys in the nursery except for Jack as they think he is cursed. “The Sandman” is set in a house with multiply stories and many stairs and rooms, which at night would creak as if it were haunted.
