Comparing Donatello's David and Michelangelo's David

In this essay I will be discussing about the art works of Donatello’s David (1437) and Michelangelo’s David (1504) as how they have contributed to the advancement of Western Art in history. I will be explaining my content by laying emphasis on the style of art, innovation, its importance and particular differences between the both art works.
Starting with the style of art of both the art works, Donatello’s David art work of early Renaissance period was under the category of classical style of ancient Rome and Greece art work. Classical style of ancient Rome and Greece art depicts the society that creates them and lays emphasis on the accomplishments of human beings. Donatello featured a young male nude with the slight bent towards hip which gives a real stance to the art in his bronze sculpture thus reintroducing several classical compositions. He depicted the victory of David over Goliath by making him holding a sword, as he stands on the head of Goliath. Whereas, Michelangelo’s David art work of High Renaissance period was under the category of classically inspired nude figures. The High Renaissance artwork usually deals with the closely observed human figures with intricate detailing and creates a balance between tranquility and motion. Donatello’s David made his sculpture in such a way that he made David stand on Goliath’s head reflecting the pride in Florence as they have won the battle whereas Michelangelo’s David portrayed David as a heroic figure who is ready to fight against enemy to protect Florence against its enemies.
