Dystopian literature is a popular genre of fictional writing used to critique societal norms or political systems by introducing an exaggerated worst-case scenario. The movie Minority Report, directed by Steven Spielburg, follows the story of a man named John Anderton who finds himself defying societal norms and working against a special police department called PreCrime. Another example of dystopian literature is the novel Fahrenheit 451, by Ray Bradbury. This novel tells the story of a firefighter, Guy Montage, who’s job is to destroy books along with the houses in which they are hidden. Additionally, the novella Animal Farm, by George Orwell, is about overworked, mistreated animals who set out to create a paradise of progress, but instead fall from one oppressive society into another. Propaganda is used as a method to manipulate and control citizens in society. An example of this can be seen in Minority Report when there is a PreCrime commercial playing on every electronic screen in the city, including buildings. This commercial vividly portrays the PreCrime systems effectiveness and efficiency, reassuring the public and rallying support for the PreCrime initiative. The advertisement is a piece of propaganda used to cultivate trust in the PreCrime police department. It manipulated people into having a false sense of security in the government and becoming reliant on them for protection. In Fahrenheit 451, the government alters historical facts and events to create false perceptions and benefit themselves.
