Michael Coelho Mrs. Segars Honors English January 2023 Utopia vs Dystopia “Freedom is not worth having if it does not include the freedom to make mistakes,” Mahatma Gandhi. In life, different societies fit different people. One’s utopia could be another’s dystopia. Modern-day societies can be free, while dystopian governments have complete control over their society. Both modern and dystopian societies have things in common such as how everybody has rules to follow. If we examine the protagonists in Ray Bradbury’s Fahrenheit 451 or The Giver by Lois Lowry, we realize dystopian societies are very harsh and the people have no control over their decisions, whereas in modern societies the people are free and happy. Unlike dystopian societies, modern-day societies have more freedom to make decisions on their own. Lois Lowry’s, The Giver, manifests how their society doesn’t have the freedom to make decisions. The protagonist Jonas is named Receiver of the community, even though it wasn’t his choice, but the choice of the elders. “You will be trained to be our next Receiver of Memory. We thank you for your childhood.” (Lowry 64) Living in this type of society would be unbearable, as people are being forced into positions that are not ideal for them. In Fahrenheit 451 and modern-day societies, books are being banned. But, only some books are banned in modern societies while all books are banned in the dystopian society in Fahrenheit 451. According to CBS News, “The 50 Most Banned Books in America”, books are being banned that relate to topics including racism, gender, and violence. Even though some books are more mature than others, they shouldn’t be getting banned since all books help people gain knowledge.
