The year is 1939 and Adolf Hitler and his Nazi Party have invaded Poland, World War II has just begun. Hitler has just risen to power in the economically and politically unstable Germany, and he has rearmed the nation for supreme power. Hitler’s invasion of Poland drives Great Britain and France to declare war, and over the next six years, conflict will take more lives and property than the war before. Soon, the Soviet Union and the United States will join in against the diabolic leader of Germany. As part of Hitler’s “Final Solution,” also known as the Holocaust, six million Jews are murdered in concentration camps along with Soviet Union prisoners, the homeless, alcoholics, gypsies, and other ethnic minorities. Both storytellers create the book through flashbacks and they focus on others more than themselves. In A Separate Peace, Gene focuses on Finny, neglecting his feelings and even formulates absurd plans that his friend is truly envious of Gene and wants to ruin his life. In The Book Thief, Death rarely ever speaks of himself and gives a complete overview of the lives and stories that add to the big picture of the story and theme. This lack of personal attention allows the other characters to build onto the theme. For example, the relationships Liesel makes help add to the theme that one must find people they love in order to get through the hard times. Gene intensely focusing on Finny creates the theme that envy can tear people apart. Finally, there is a large difference between the supernatural and humanity. Since Death is an almost ghostly being, and Gene is a simple man, there is a huge difference between the overseer and the narrow-minded. Gene heavily focuses on the events and people that affect him, like Finny, but Death can find beauty in every aspect of the story he tells.
