The poem “The Mending Wall” by Robert Frost and the short story “The Yellow Wall Paper” by Charlotte Perkins Gilman are wonderful pieces of literature. These two pieces of literature share many similarities and differences. “The Mending Wall” explains many family traditions such as building a fence in the back yard. During this poem, Frost can be seen as being straightforward due to the fact that in the poem many negative aspects of a building a wall is displayed. Frost argues that his neighbors are only doing what their parents have told them to do; which means that they are only following old traditions. To the narrator, the wall is not physically appealing, and he does not enjoy the fact that every year him and his neighbors have to come together to repair this wall. Where as, in “The Yellow Wall-Paper” the narrator explains the story of a woman breaking free from her normal life. It can be interpreted that the narrator was not happy with her old self, so when she got the opportunity to break free she took it as quickly as she could. …show more content…

Although the messages seem to be different but after analyzing both of these literature, the message is to be free These free thoughts give a person the capability to live how he chooses in “The Mending Wall” the narrator wants to be free from the tradition of having to put up a fence in the back yard. In “The Yellow Wall-Paper” the narrator is breaking free from her normal self. It becomes clear that the primary theme in both works of literature is simply freedom.
