This company has completely flipped the technology world upside down by being an industry leader in internet-related services and products in the form of a search engine, cloud and email services, and software packages. What most people don’t know, however, is that this tech giant is also transforming what it means to be a sustainable company by being on the forefront of many revolutionary business practices. From the universities earliest years, it was one of the first and premier colleges excelling in agricultural sciences. From the university’s conception in 1855, sustainability has always been a top priority. Whether it was more than 100 years ago, teaching sustainable farming, or today, with trying to utilize green energy to meet their energy consumption needs. Unlike Google, Penn State is not a business, however the university is completing several projects similar to Google in order to maintain their high standard of being a sustainable campus. In fact, the university is investing $60 million over the next 5 years in energy efficient and conservation initiatives and renovations. Penn State has already seen a reduction of greenhouse gasses of 18% since 2005 and has set a goal of a 35% reduction by 2020 (Sustainability Initiative). Today, the entirety of Penn State University is comprised of more than 40,000 students sprawled out on a campus more than 8,556 acres (Fast Facts on The Pennsylvania State University). Maintaining the university while remaining impressively sustainable is no easy task.
