Family can be deceiving and sometimes justice must be seeked in order to be served, Hamlet by William Shakespeare is a play about a young prince who seeks revenge against his uncle. The Lion King is a disney movie about a lion prince who disappears from his kingdom after his father dies. It has been widely debated on whether if the Lion King took inspiration from Hamlet or not. Both instances share key similarities that reader and watchers could pick out easily. In both stories the main characters have a similar background. Hamlet, is a young and impressionable Prince of Denmark, son to the King of Denmark who had died recently in the story (Act 1, Scene 1). In Hamlet the uncle, Claudius, wants the late king’s wife, and in The Lion King, Scar wants the Mufasa’s power over the land. Scar and Claudius also share some similar characteristics, both are very deceptive, ruthless, and egocentric. For example, Uncles from both the Lion and Hamlet have attempted to kill off their nephews. In Hamlet, Claudius sends Hamlet off to England where he assumes that Hamlet would not survive (Act 1, Scene 3). In The Lion King, Scar scares Simba off making him run into the wilderness where he could be killed by the hyenas (Stampede Scene). Furthermore, in both movie and play, the main characters build a strong friendship with their companions. In Hamlet, Hamlet has a strong friendship with his best friend from college, Horatio. Horatio main role within the play is to inspire Hamlet and guide his to decisions. Similarly, Pumba and Timon inspires and guides Simba, they pick him up when he is troubled and taught him how to enjoy life. Hamlet’s and Simba’s lives both spirals out of control when their uncles take over, Hamlet is plagued with the ideas of ways to get rid of Claudius, meanwhile, Simba has troubles finding out who he really
